But I am still involved in other games and blogging. After having written a couple articles about HeroQuest on this Blog, I am now working on a new project :

NFTs, Crytpos and Blockchains

This new blog intends at introducing non initiated to all those new technologies... This version is now comprehensive and should do the job for almost any kind of flight. Yet it is still really basic and needs further improvement... Do not hesitate to send feed-backs after you've tried it.

After the 2 basic navigation training missions, I'm working on a new mission dedicated to the sensors. In this mission you will find different type of planes and radars so that you can drill your SPO-15 understanding and management of your radar and EOS. The aim of this mission is to train on the situation awareness which is key to any engagement...

As usual after a long break, I have to familiarize again with the simulator. Yet it is a good opportunity to start all again with a new plane and learning its procedures.

The designated target will be the Sukhoi Su-27.

This plane has always been my favorite from the time I saw it for real at Le Bourget Airshow or when I played with it on Flanker simulator (the very first one).

To start I had to gather information about this plane and its procedures. As the documentation provided by DCS manual is really poor I have been given a link to a very comprehensive document that can be found on http://www.secretprojects.co.uk.
Based on this document and on the previous check-lists I had already written (see the documentation page on this blog) I began to write and test the cold and dark procedures for this plane.

Here are some pictures of it

First step is to check the plane and the cockpit:

You may have noticed that each flight started where the previous one had stopped. Regardless of the simulator I used. That was nice in the beginning, giving a long flight record as you can see on the map below :

Yet that was too much restrictive and I couldn't fly the simulator I wanted to unless it had a map of the world area I was supposed to be in. Most of the time it meant flying with FSX to move to an area that was existing in another simulator like DCS World or Falcon 4 BMS.

As I don't have much time to fly these days, I couldn't stand this rule and I realize now that it was the main reason for not being able to publish on this Blog.

As a conclusion, I will now fly kinds of "snapflights" regardless of the virtual location or anything else...ClemGrthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08266205173593586001noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6575556722860695348.post-77146056841194707482020-03-21T10:18:00.001+01:002020-03-21T10:18:44.169+01:00Master switch...ONClemGrthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08266205173593586001noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6575556722860695348.post-44278358385369969122019-11-24T01:18:00.000+01:002019-11-24T01:18:19.304+01:00New link to the SU25T check-listsYou can find them in pdf format here
But I am quite busy at work, and I spend some of my spare time developing an application that runs on Android : Memory des Nombres
It is a game based on the Memory designed to help young children (between 4 and 8) to learn reading numbers... Yet it might be quite challenging for grown ups too. Do not hesitate to check it out and try to rank at the first place ;)Memorialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06078876972130032942noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6575556722860695348.post-5602538411169905762018-02-22T11:07:00.002+01:002018-04-27T20:45:52.887+02:00[FSX] Pilatus PC6 Porter : Through Turkey (Part. 1)The next stage of my journey will bring me from Cyprus to continental part of Turkey. My destination will be Adana airport LTAF.
Since I will be flying over the sea, I have to fill a flight plan.

(FPL-FGRT2-VG
-PC6T/L-FGOUV/A
-LCGK1300
-N0117F050 3542N3434E/N117F045 3612N3456E ADA
-LTAF0140 LTAG
-0)

Once validated by IFPS, I can focus on the airport charts. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any documentation about Gecitkale. Thus I focus on LTAF at Adana. The active runway is 09, so I will carry out a direct departure to the East.

Then I will fly to the North-East end of the island to cross the sea at the shortest and reach the shores of Turkey. Then I will follow the coast until I'm close to LTAF.

To land I decided to follow VOR 1 landing chart. As far as I understood, I had to go right over the ADA VOR (112.7) at 3000 ft then turn to the 206° for 2 minutes. Next step is to turn right to intercept 51° radial and descend to 2500 ft and wait to be at 7.5 nm from the airfield to start descending on final. It looks easy except that I have no clue on how I will determine when I will be 7.5 nm far from the runway.
I will use LTAG Incirlik airport as a divert landing site in case of problem. Both are really close from one another.
Concerning fuel, I start with the amount I had at the end of the previous flight : 135 gal.

Leaving Gecitkale

After take-off, I immediately climb to 5500 ft heading 52° to follow the island until it's far end. It is also time to train using that propeller lever. Once on cruise condition, I reduce use it to my RPM and watch the torque grow as a consequence. During all this phase, throttle is left at around 85% which is marked green on the tachometer.

Turning point

24 minutes later I'm on my turning point. A look at my fuel gauge tells me I'm still good : 130 gal. So I turn left to face the sea. As I'm now flying to the 310° I have to descend to 4500 ft.
Today was quite an easy flight yet I still had trouble managing the throttle and the power lever. This is going to be the main axis of work of the following sessions.

The plan for the following flights is to close the Falcon BMS chapter to open a brand new one.

Yet I need first to travel to a new theater. Thus the first flight will be a VFR navigation from Akrotiri LCRA to Gecitkale LCGK . This will bring me from the Greek part of Cyprus to the Turkish one. In the near future, I will have to cross that country to go to my final destination.

In order to make this flight more enjoyable, I will follow the coast line.

To carry out this flight, I will dust my old Pilatus PC6 Porter by Tim "Piglet" Conrad.

Obviously I will have to train a bit before going on travel with this plane. So I will start with remembering the check-lists, then I will carry out some circuit training and finally fill my tank up and leave for Gecitkale airfield.

1 - Check lists

First step in this training is to familiarize again with the check-lists of this plane. It has been a while since I haven't flown the PC6, I almost have to restart from the beginning.
My reference is still the document written by Scott Werner and available here.
Fortunately the Pilatus is really easy to handle and to fly and there are not too much systems to deal with. It should be long before I am able to fly it again...

Pilatus PC6

After a short training, I have no difficulty in starting up the engine and taxiing to the runway threshold.

2 - Circuit training

Circuit at Akrotiri LCRA on runway 10 is right handed and should be flown at 1200 ft QFE.

Once aligned on the runway, I slowly push the throttle to full and then release the brake. The plane starts rolling as I keep the yoke full aft until 25 kts. Then I slowly release it. Decision speed is 45 kts and rotation 50 kts.
Once leaving the ground, I briefly press the brake to stop the wheels rolling. At 500 ft, I bring the flaps up and trim to keep on climbing at around 80 kts and 950 ft/m.

I check engine instruments perform the climb-out check-list.

Climbing out

Once at 1200 ft and above the sea, I turn right to enter downwind leg.

Downwind leg

A quick rest and it is already time to carry out the approach check-list. Decelerating from 90 kts to 70 kts.

Landing speed is around 70 kts .

Once on the ground I push the throttle forward again and take-off for another circuit. In the same conditions.

Below is the record of my two circuits. Easy to see where the wind blows from...

Circuit training record

Finally we had 4 Mig 29 coming near our patrol area.

My wing-man immediately asked permission to engage. Which I gave her. Unfortunately, she fired all her missiles without hitting any of them. But all the patrol around seemed to come and the 4 hostiles were soon shot down before I even could acquire one.

There was nothing more to report during the flight and we got back home to debrief.

Despite apparent success of the mission, further analysis revealed that 2 Mig-29 could enter my airspace and shot down friend aircraft. I wasn't aware at all of their presence.
And this is the main point of it : situational awareness. It's the critical part of a mission and I was in a total lack of it.

I'll have to find out how to improve this !Memorialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06078876972130032942noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6575556722860695348.post-53351941222612554502017-10-16T09:24:00.000+02:002017-10-16T09:24:01.304+02:00[Falcon 4 BMS] Mirage 2000-5 : Operation Standing Wave (modified)Theater : Israel
During the briefing I used the previously gathered data about fuel management to calculate my Bingo (see previous article about fuel management). I know that I have 1000 lb unavailable and 1000 lb to save in case of missed approach. There is no airfield around so I can't plan an alternate landing site. Finally, the farthest point of the mission is 186 nm away and I plan to fly à 480 kt (TAS) at FL200 so I would need 186 x 14 = 2604 lb. My Bingo is then 4600 lb.

Before taking-off I could admire the 4th squadron's C-17 with whom we share the airbase.
The flight was absolutely quiet. Mainly because of my leader who never answered to orders of the AWACS. This one ordered us a couple of time to engage bandit aircraft but he seemed to never cooperate. Fortunately no hostile came in our area and the mission was a success. But once more I come to the conclusion that I need to take the lead and never let the AI be in charge...

Note that during the final course, the ATC ordered me to execute a missed approach and I could then see that my fuel calculation were right. I landed at around 1200 lb left!

Next time I'll keep on that kind of mission but I'll endorse the flight leader role.Memorialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06078876972130032942noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6575556722860695348.post-90855994892009742022017-10-10T19:32:00.001+02:002017-10-10T19:32:16.301+02:00[Falcon 4 BMS] Mirage 2000-5 : Check-lists and proceduresI have just released that latest version of my check-lists and procedures for the Mirage 2000-5.
BRIEFING

I will take-off from Akrotiri Airbase (LCRA) and fly to Port Said (HEPS) where I shall execute a missed approach and divert to As Salihiya airport where I will land.

During the flight, I will do 4 different branches :
From take-off to WP 2 : at 20,000 ft and TAS 480 kt for 30 nm
WP 2 to WP 3 : 20,000 ft, TAS 540 kt for 45 nm
WP 3 to WP 4 : 5,000 ft, TAS 540 kt for 45 nm
WP 4 to WP 5 : 5000 ft, TAS 480 for 45 nm
WP 5 to WP 6 : 5000 ft, TAS 360 for 58 nm

then the missed approach

And finally flying to the alternate airfield at 5,000ft, TAS 360 kt for 14 nm

About fuel management now.

I will start with a full load of 13846 lb

Rampstart and taxi should burn 600 lb, thus before take off I should be around 13,200 lb.

Taking off and climbing to FL350 burns another 1400 lb which leaves around 11,800 lb.

Then:

WP1 to WP2 burns 30x14 = 420 lb, fuel left : 11,400 lb

WP2 to WP3 burns 45x15 = 675 lb, fuel left : 10,700 lb

WP3 to WP4 burns 45x23 = 1035 lb, fuel left : 9,700 lb

WP4 to WP5 burns 45x22 = 990 lb, fuel left : 8,700 lb

WP5 to WP6 burns 58x19 = 1102 lb, fuel left : 7,600 lb

The missed approach costs 1000lb

And flying to the alternate airfield burns 14x19 = 266 lb so that in the end I should have no lower than 6300 lb left.
For this exercise I set the Bingo fuel at 6300 lb to monitor the final result.

FLIGHT

After rampstart and taxi I only burnt 250 lb instead of the 400 lb I expected. This is only due to the fact that I had included the take off in this part where it's now included in the climbing toward FL350. I will have to change the value to 300 lb.

Then I flew the ascent to the FL350 which costed me 2000 lb instead of the 1400 lb intended.
This difference may be explained by the fact I circled arround the airfield during the climb to stay at my first way-point and I forgot to set my altimeter to the 1013 hPa required to use flight levels so I may have flown higher than I should. Furthermore I have an heavier load than in Topolo's charts ( 33.500 lb instead of 26.600 lb total weight).

Flying from WP1 to WP2 I should have burnt 420 lb and I only used 350. The reason is I had to descend from FL350 to FL200 during this step. This saved me 70 lb.

From WP2 to WP3, I had calculated a consumption of 675 lb and I burnt 750 lb. I assume this is due to the overweight.
From WP3 to WP4, 1035 lb calculated, 700 lb burnt. Once again I had to descend from FL220 to 5,000ft which saved quite a lot of fuel.
From WP4 to WP5, 990 lb calculated, 800 lb burnt and from WP5 to WP6, 1102 lb calculated, 900 lb burnt. In both cases, I spent around 200 lb less than intended.
All these differences might be due to the fact that calculated consumptions are rounded to a higher value for safety purposes.

Then I did the aborted landing and navigated to the divert airfield.
When finally the bingo fuel occured, I was in short final! Which is not too bad in deed!
After landing I had 6200 lb left in my tanks, only 100 lb less than I should have.

In conclusion I think I will have to do the exercise again to improve my accuracy in flight parameters...
