ADDING SCENERY

Setting up a scenery in FSX might be quite tricky because of a bug in the software. Here is the walk through :
  • Unpack the new scenery in the following directory : "\Flight Simulator X\Addon Scenery".
Let's use for example the free add-on "Airports of Norway".

Depending on the scenery, a now folder will be created or not in which you will find the sub-folders that includes scenery resources. They are divided into two sub-folders : "Scenery" and "Texture".

In this example there will be one folder named "\Flight Simulator X\Addon Scenery\Airports of Norway"
  • Now, launch FSX and go to the "SETTINGS" then, in the row "Other settings", click on "Scenery library..."
  • A new window opens containing a list of sceneries ordered by decreasing priority. Click on "Add new area...".
  • Another window opens so that you enter the path where the scenery is. Go to the folder "\Flight Simulator X\Addon Scenery\Airports of Norway". Here you can see the sub-folders "Scenery" and "Texture".
  • Click on "Ok". Until now everything is okay but... (here comes the trick) the window does not close.
  • You will have to click in the explorer area surrounded in red in the picture below. Only then will the window close and you will se your scenery in the priority list. Just check that it is activated and you are done.

ADDING AI TRAFFIC

This is how to greatly improve AI trafic in FSX :

First you will have to download two free software : World of AI installer et AI Fight Planner.

The first one can be found on the dedicated website : http://www.world-of-ai.com/ in the "Packages", and the second can be found on http://www.Stuff4fs.com, in User Applications / AI Flight Planner.

World of AI is in deed an installer which enable us to add traffic planes from packages. Try to download one to follow this tutorial. Some packages can be found on the same page just below. You will be redirected to two different websites : Avsim or FlightSim.com.

Then you will get a compressed file itself compressed in a .woai.zip. This is the file you will have to designate to  World of AI.

Now, launch WOAI Installer.exe. This installer is really easy to handle. Don't forget to select the right Flight Simulator version. Note that it is possible to select several files at a time.

Click on "Next" then on "Install" and you are done with it...

Yet, you still have some conversion to do. If you launch FSX now, you will notice that all default traffic has vanished. This is a well known issue due to FS9 formated traffic files. It can be solved through AI Flight Planner.

Once downloaded an installed, launch AI Flight Planner by double clicking on  AIFP2.exe.
In the menu, go to Bulk Traffic->Convert FS9 Traffic Files to FSX.
An explorer window opens. Go to .\Flight Simulator X\Scenery\World\Scenery\
The software automatically finds FS9 formatted files. Select then by ticking the box and also tick the box next to Delete FS9 files after conversion.
Now click on "Convert" a new window opens asking you to choose in which folder the converted files should be set. Select : .\Flight Simulator X\Scenery\World\Scenery\ again.

Be careful, if one single FS9 formated file remains, you will loose all default traffic in FSX.

At last, please note that there is a website where you can find military AI traffic : Military AI Works. There you just need to download packs which automatically set up and then convert the files from FS9 to FSXI.

At last, you do need to deactivate DirectX 10. If not, as soon as a plane starts moving, it will loose its textures!
